Case study: a 400 m² ISO 7 cleanroom for an automotive production line

1. Starting point

Our automotive client was launching a new production line requiring a precisely controlled working environment. The process demanded: full control of particulate contamination, stable temperature and humidity, room overpressure of minimum 15 Pa, ISO 7 cleanliness (Cleanroom class 10,000), and 24/7 continuity under variable production loads.

The zone covered approximately 400 m², divided into several functional rooms with different airflow and pressure requirements.

2. Key engineering challenges

Audits and analyses showed that success would depend on: designing an air system with a very large airflow (above 100,000 m³/h) while keeping the pressure balance; using absorption dehumidifiers to hold the humidity parameter regardless of weather; providing cooling capacity with genuine reserve; and achieving class-compliant filtration with a workable service regime.

3. The delivered system

Air handling and dehumidification

The system delivers a total airflow above 100,000 m³/h, with absorption dehumidifiers rated 18,000 m³/h holding stable humidity independent of outdoor conditions — critical for PVB film processing.

An 800 kW chilled water plant

The cooling system provides stable medium temperature under all conditions, capacity for high loads, a power reserve for future line expansion, and high energy efficiency in round-the-clock operation. It is equipped with an emergency by-pass, flow and temperature protections, and dedicated circuits for the air handling units and the process.

Filtration and class 10,000 cleanliness

With final H14 filtration, correct airflow distribution and room overpressures, the zone achieves stable ISO 7 cleanliness to the client’s requirements.

5. The outcome

The project demonstrates that properly engineered HVAC directly affects product quality, line throughput and operating costs.
